Over the years, we’ve helped countless people transform their homes with our window treatments, and I’ve picked up a few tricks along the way. Whether you’re a first-time buyer or a seasoned design enthusiast, these tips will help you get the most out of your window treatment experience.
So, grab your measuring tape (yes, you’ll need it!), and let’s dive in!
I know—everyone’s heard the adage, “measure twice, cut once.” But at Everhem, we take it further and recommend measuring three times at three different parts of your window. Trust me—accuracy is EVERYTHING. A small mistake in measurement can throw off the entire look, and no one wants that! You can ensure your custom window treatment fits just right by measuring in multiple spots. This simple extra step can save you time and frustration later on.
Do you have small windows and want to make them appear larger? I have a favorite trick for that. Instead of mounting your shades inside the window frame, I suggest an outside mount. By installing your shades on the drywall above the window, you can make your windows feel grander. To make a difference, mount your shade about 5-6 inches above the window and make sure the shade is 1.5-2 inches wider on each side. It’s a simple yet effective way to add dramatic flair to even the tiniest spaces!
If you haven’t considered cafe curtains for your space yet, let me tell you: it’s time to start! These charming, versatile window treatments are making a huge comeback. Whether you’re styling a cozy kitchen or want a bit of privacy in a bathroom, cafe curtains are the perfect solution. They’re casual, and beautiful, and allow you to control the amount of light that enters your space. Plus, they come in endless fabric options, so you can customize them to fit your aesthetic!
I’m about to tell you a little secret: motorization is one of the best features we offer at Everhem. And the best part? It requires NO electrical wiring. Yup, you read that right! Our motorized shades are powered by a rechargeable battery, which lasts about 4-6 months before needing a charge. It’s the perfect solution for hard-to-reach windows or if you just love the idea of controlling your shades with the touch of a button. Once you experience it, you’ll wonder why you didn’t try it sooner!
Here’s another trick I love: mount drapery rods halfway between the top of the window and the ceiling when installing drapery rods. This placement creates an elegant, balanced look that draws the eye and gives the room a more spacious feel. If you’re working with high ceilings or a pitched roof, keep in mind the room's scale—what looks good in a tiny room might not work as well in a large one. But as a general rule, placing your rod halfway is a great starting point for any space.

In the nursery, Hannah made sure to achieve the perfect balance of light and darkness for her newborn. The light shines beautifully through the privacy-lined shades made with custom fabric from Chelsea Textiles, Hugo Stripe in Seafoam. The combination of the light-filtering shades and blackout roller shades behind them ensures that the room can be transformed from bright and airy during the day to a dark, restful space at nap time or nighttime.
One of the best features? The cordless shades. For a mom with a newborn, being able to adjust the shades with one hand (especially while holding the baby) is a game-changer! It’s a small design detail that makes a massive difference for multitasking parents.
Everhem was particularly excited to partner with Hannah on these roller shades, a product we’ve introduced more recently with the trade program. We’re even considering bringing them online for all to enjoy—shhh, stay tuned!

Hannah’s kitchen is another standout feature of her home. With four young boys, the kitchen is truly the heart of the home. Hannah’s favorite thing about the space is its spaciousness. The open layout accommodated her family’s needs, making it a great space for cooking, mealtime, and entertaining.
"We were very intentional with the open layout, which allows for cooking, mealtime, and entertaining to be such a delight—even with so many boys running around," she shares.
Everhem installed café curtains in the kitchen to complement the space’s English cottage aesthetic. The kitchen paint is Farrow & Ball’s Sweet Butter and the cozy banquette dining areas provide the perfect backdrop for these curtains, which not only add a layer of privacy but also evoke a sense of nostalgia. The café curtains bring the room a soft, vintage touch, tying the entire design together beautifully.
When asked about special design features, Hannah highlighted the large island, painted in Farrow & Ball’s Cardamom; she chose for the kitchen. "We went LARGE with our island, and I'm so glad that we did! It incorporates lots of storage below, seating around, and an empty surface top, which has worked well for us. The island is where the boys come to eat, do homework, play cards, or chat while I cook. I love that we can all do our things while still being together and feeling connected."
Her design style is all about functionality, intentionality, and comfort. "While our home is well designed, it's also warm and full of life—bursting with kids and chaos!"

One of the exciting design solutions we proposed to Hannah was for her front door, which has glass on the upper half. To provide added privacy without compromising the space's aesthetic, Everhem suggested a solution that’s a bit of a trade secret: rod top and bottom curtains.
These curtains feature rods that slip through the fabric at both the top and bottom of the panels, allowing them to hang slightly gathered with soft folds. For Hannah's front door, we used the same pebble sheers installed in the kitchen.
This design choice serves a dual purpose: functionally, the curtains provide enough privacy so that no one can see inside, while still allowing those inside the home to see who might be at the door. The ability to add a layer of privacy without sacrificing visibility is especially helpful for a busy household.
Design-wise, the rod top and bottom curtains hit the mark, adding an elevated touch to the entryway. It’s a subtle yet sophisticated way to enhance the design while fulfilling a practical need—and we couldn’t be more pleased with how it turned out!

In this guide, we’ll walk you through the essential steps to measure your windows confidently so you can achieve a flawless look with Everhem’s beautifully designed treatments.
Determining the Width: Start by measuring the width of your window from the outer edge to the outer edge. Take three separate measurements at the window's top, middle, and bottom to account for any frame irregularities.
Accounting for Stack Space: The stack is the extra width required beyond the window frame to allow the drapery to open fully without blocking natural light. A good rule of thumb is to add at least 10 inches per side for optimal coverage and a clean, polished look.
Measuring the Length: Measure from the outer top edge of the window to the floor at three points: left, center, and right. This ensures even panel lengths and a symmetrical appearance.
Considering Mounting Height: Everhem’s hardware requires at least 3 1/2 inches of space above the window frame. However, for a more dramatic effect, we recommend mounting your drapery rods 10 inches above the window frame whenever possible. This creates the illusion of taller windows and a more refined aesthetic.
Measuring the Width: For inside-mounted shades, measure the interior width of the window frame at the top, middle, and bottom. Round down to the nearest 1/8 inch for a precise fit.

Assessing Depth: The depth of your window frame determines the shade control you can use. Measure the flat mounting surface inside the window and round down to the nearest 1/4 inch. This helps you select the right control mechanism for your shades.
Measuring the Width: For outside-mounted shades, measure the outer edges of the window frame at three points and round up to the nearest 1/8 inch. To ensure complete coverage, add approximately 2 inches to the total width.
Determining the Length: Measure the outside length of the window frame in three places and round up to the nearest 1/8 inch. Add at least 5 inches to ensure complete coverage when mounted on the wall. If you want to increase your shades for a more dramatic look, include that additional height in your measurements.
Important Note: If you choose a front-operated shade and mount it on drywall, ensure the window trim depth is less than 2 1/2 inches. If the depth exceeds this, a back-operated shade is recommended for a better fit.
